The list is your most important asset
You can write the most perfect message in the world, but if there's no one to send it to — there's no point. Building a quality SMS list is the first and most important step in SMS marketing, and it's the step many businesses skip.
"I'll just buy a list" — no. Bought lists are a legal problem (anti-spam law), an ethical problem, and a marketing problem (high opt-out and complaint rates). The only way to build a list that works is to build it yourself, with people who actually want to hear from you.
12 ways to build an SMS list
1. Signup form on your site
Add a "phone number + consent for SMS" field everywhere a customer fills out details: signup, purchase, contact, newsletter.
Tip: don't just ask for a number. Tell them what they're getting: "Leave your number and get exclusive deals, product updates, and 10% off your first order."
2. Pop-up on the site with an incentive
A pop-up that offers a discount in exchange for a phone number. 5–8% of site visitors sign up through a good pop-up.
"Get 10% off your first order! Leave your number and we'll send the coupon code via SMS."
Important: keep your promise. Send the coupon immediately. Also — the pop-up should appear after 15–30 seconds on the site, not right away. Let people orient themselves first.
3. At the point of sale (POS)
The salesperson in the store asks: "Want to get exclusive deals on SMS? We'll give 10% off your next purchase." Simple, human, works.
Signup rate in physical stores: 25–40%. Much higher than online, because there's a personal interaction.
4. Wi-Fi in the business
Have Wi-Fi for customers (cafe, restaurant, store)? Set up the login to require a phone number. The customer gets Wi-Fi, you get a number + consent.
5. Link on social media
Post in a story, post, or bio: "Join our SMS VIP list — deals we don't post anywhere else! Sign up: [link]"
The principle: give a reason to sign up that doesn't exist in other channels. If the same deals are on Instagram — why would anyone sign up for SMS too?
6. Contest / giveaway
"Leave your number and enter to win [prize]!" — a great method for fast growth, but note: some of the signups will be "prize hunters" who aren't really interested. Expect higher opt-out after the contest.
7. QR code in the store / on packaging
Print a QR code that leads to a signup page. Put it on the counter, on bags, on business cards, on receipts.
"Scan and get 15% off your next purchase!"
8. "Keyword to SMS"
The customer sends an SMS with a specific word (like JOIN or VIP) to your number, and signs up automatically. Great for radio ads, billboards, or events.
"Text VIP to [number] and get an exclusive discount!"
9. When booking a service
Scheduling an appointment, booking a table, arranging a delivery — every time a customer leaves a number, ask if they want to get updates.
10. Referral program
Existing customers invite friends: "Send the link to a friend — when they sign up, you both get 10% off."
This doesn't just grow the list — it brings customers who are already "warmed up" because a friend recommended.
11. In existing email
You already have an email list? Send an email: "Want to get deals first, before everyone else? Join our SMS channel: [link]"
12. Events and trade shows
At conferences, open days, and trade shows — a tablet with a signup form and an incentive (small gift, raffle, coupon) brings in dozens of signups an hour.
How fast can you grow?
A small business running 3–4 methods in parallel can reach:
• Month 1: 200–500 signups
• Month 3: 800–1,500 signups
• Month 6: 2,000–4,000 signups
• Year: 5,000–10,000 signups
The size of the list matters less than its quality. 1,000 customers who really want to hear from you are worth more than 10,000 random numbers.
