The art of writing an SMS that sells
You have 70 characters in Hebrew (or 160 in English) to convince someone to act. Not an easy task, but with the right techniques, a short SMS can drive amazing results. The difference between a message that gets deleted immediately and one that drives a purchase is often a word or two.
The winning structure of an SMS
Every effective marketing SMS is built from 4 components:
1. Identification (who you are) — business or brand name. The customer has to know instantly who the message is from.
2. Hook (why read) — an opening that grabs attention: deal, news, urgency.
3. Value proposition (what they get) — what the customer will gain by acting.
4. Call to action (what to do) — one clear, specific action.
15 tips for writing winning marketing SMS
1. Start with value, not with a greeting
❌ No: "Dear customer, we're pleased to inform you that we have a deal..."
✅ Yes: "30% off the new collection! Today only at [business name]."
The customer sees the first 2–3 words in the preview. Make them count.
2. Use the customer's name
A message starting "Hi Dana" gets a 26% higher response rate than a generic message. Most SMS systems support dynamic fields.
3. Create genuine urgency
✅ Effective: "Until midnight," "Today only," "5 spots left," "Stock running out"
❌ Not effective: fake urgency or recurring in every message. Customers catch on to manipulation.
4. One number, one offer, one action
Don't overload. "30% off + free shipping + gift + club points" is confusing. Pick the strongest offer and focus on it.
5. Use numbers
Numbers catch the eye: "50% off" beats "half price." "₪99 instead of ₪199" beats "significant discount."
6. Write in the second person
"Get 20% off" not "We're offering 20% off." The message should be about the customer, not you.
7. Strong call to action
Use active, specific verbs:
• "Order now" (not "orders can be placed")
• "Click here" (not "the link is attached")
• "Show at the register" (not "the coupon can be used")
• "Reply YES" (not "if interested, you may reply")
8. Trim without losing clarity
Every word you can drop without hurting the message — drop it. "We're pleased to inform you that — " is completely unnecessary.
9. Use short links
A long link takes precious characters and looks unprofessional. Use shortening services like bit.ly or the platform's internal shortening.
10. Test before you send
Send the message to yourself before mass-sending. Check: does the link work? Is the name displayed correctly? Is the message cut off?
11. Match the audience
A VIP message should feel different from a new-customer message. "As a VIP, get early access to…" feels exclusive.
12. Avoid filter-triggering words
Words like "free!!!", "get rich fast," or excessive exclamation may flag the message as spam.
13. Include an opt-out
Beyond the legal requirement, it builds trust. "Reply STOP to opt out" — simple and professional.
14. A/B test
Send two versions to small groups and see what works better. Sometimes changing one word doubles conversion.
15. Learn from the data
Track what works and what doesn't. Which messages got the most clicks? At what hour? What kind of offer? Build the next one based on what you learned.
